Staying Healthy and Happy During Menopause: Self-Care Tips

Menopause is a time of mental, physical and emotional changes.  Women cannot hide from this life experience, it will affect every woman.  Some will have no symptoms and breeze gracefully through this phase of life, and some of us will suffer emotional, experience physical disruptions, lack of mental acuity, possible depression and a myriad of other symptoms that occur when hormones are trying to find a new homeostasis.  There are ways to create balance to minimize the turbulence, to help reset the body, to calm the mind and allow the true essence of menopause to do what it does best: bring comfort peace and joy to this life phase.

Here are some ideas that may help alleviate your menopause symptoms:

  • Curated wellness diet for hormonal balance.

We all know how important diet is, and in various stages of life our body needs certain macros and micronutrients to optimize our performance, whether we are working, playing, raising children, training is sports or leading a sedentary life.  All adjustments to our diets are necessary as these shifts occur.  Menopause is a phase that needs thoughtful consideration of its food intake.  Women in menopausal stage should consider reducing sugars, increasing fats, and bulking up on fibrous foods. Ideally an anti-inflammatory diet, and a solid evaluation of portion sizes.

  • Physical development classes for mature women:

Those hour-long sessions on the treadmill to burn calories or other cardiovascular exercises aren’t going to create the results they did in our younger years. Strength training to build bone density and fat metabolism is the new focus.  Opening the chest cavity and strengthening the pelvic floor as we age will have long term health benefits.

  • Meditation and Mindfulness:

Anxiety and depression are often experienced during menopause, it is a time that hasn’t been mapped out for us.  We are taught to grow up, become educated, marry, build a family, secure finances, and eventually retire and enjoy the fruits of our labor.  How do we turn off the switch of the first half of our lie, there are no guidelines to letting go and surrendering.  Mindfulness practices such as meditation, pranayama, deep breathing, and yoga can help transition by reducing stress and anxiety and promote relaxation.
